Homemade Dips

Dips are usually quite simple to prepare and offer diners a nice way to appease a growing appetite. Dips are a great way to get the party started by compelling guests to gather around the table and partake in your festive appetizer. A nice variety of dips and dippers is always welcome to those who want to mix and match to their taste buds and cravings.

Dips have been made for decades from packaged dip mixes and by combining common supermarket products such as onion soup mix, processed cheese, and sour cream. Tastes have changed over the years, and whole some classic dip recipes are still prepared today, more and more home cooks are turning to healthier and more imaginative choices in their dip making.

Most dips can be prepared well in advance, and in fact many dips taste much better after the ingredients and flavors have had an opportunity to blend. Doubling or tripling a recipe to handle a large crowd usually means little more work than the original recipe, only a few more items at the supermarket. Most dips will stay fresh for several days if stored properly. You can find a second use for unused portions of many dip recipes as a side dish or topping for grilled or baked chicken breasts, frittatas, tacos, soups, and salads.

Many salad dressings and vinaigrettes do double duty as dips. Ranch, blue cheese, and honey mustard salad dressings are staples in restaurants around the world as dips for popular dishes like chicken wings, breadsticks, and onion rings. Homemade versions of popular store-bought salad dressings are a snap to put together, and generally taste better and are much healthier for you.

Every major cuisine showcases incredible dips. Some delicious example include aioli and tapenade from French cuisine; caponata and pesto from Italian cuisine; Tzatizki from Greek cuisine; Guacamole and Salsa Roja from Mexican cuisine; Hummus, Baba ghanoush, and Tabolleh from Middle Eastern cuisine; and Raita and Chutney from Indian and South Asian cuisine. Dippers can an assortment of raw vegetables, known as crudités, potato or tortilla chips, water or Ritz crackers, fresh or toasted bread slices, Naan or Pita Bread.
